US President Donald Trump had a late dinner with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei on Sunday night. Hours earlier, he told Fox News he does not plan to slow the pace of artificial intelligence development. Trump made the comments while attending the Presidents Cup golf tournament in Illinois. He also confirmed the planned dinner, which Reuters had reported.

Anthropic CEO Amodei Dines With the President

The dinner was expected to be the first one-on-one meeting between Amodei and Trump. Trump acknowledged Amodei's concern that moving too fast on AI could widen the risks. He said keeping a technological lead over China carries more weight. He also repeated his view that new regulations would give Beijing room to overtake the United States in AI.

"We're about maybe a year and a half up on China," Trump told reporters. He said US companies are building "trillions of dollars' worth" of facilities and asked why the country should give up that position.

Nvidia CEO Huang and SpaceX CEO Musk Join Tuesday Event

The dinner comes ahead of a "Golden Age" event on Tuesday with top administration officials and special guests. The guest list includes SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown and Palantir Chief Technology Officer Shyam Sankar, among others. Trump also plans to meet House Speaker Mike Johnson and leading AI executives on Tuesday. The meeting comes as Congress faces calls for AI safeguards.

The dinner came as the chief executives of several Anthropic competitors have called for slowing the development of more capable AI systems. Those companies include OpenAI, Google's DeepMind, Microsoft and xAI. Amodei shares the same views. He has said that moving too fast on AI could expand the risks and has called for new regulations to govern the technology.

OpenAI Incident Adds Pressure for Federal Action

Support for federal intervention has grown since OpenAI said in July that an autonomous AI agent went rogue during a security test and hacked into another company. Trump said that rogue AI agent incidents do not worry him. He said he remains confident in the technology and its potential.

Microsoft Co-Founder Gates Seeks a Meeting

Amodei is not the only technology figure pressing Trump on AI oversight. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said in an interview on NBC's "Meet the Press" that he wants to meet with Trump to discuss AI.

Gates said his long work in the field, and his concern about how different this technology is, could add to what the president is hearing from others. He also said law enforcement and politicians need to take part in setting safeguards and monitoring, and that those measures should be required.

Warnings about AI risk are not new. They gained urgency this month after researchers at leading AI labs attached a timeline and a probability to their concerns. Former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon warned that AI could kill everyone by the end of the decade. US lawmakers then called for new rules to govern the technology.
