Google has just implemented new AI features across Maps. By using AI to analyze over a billion images every day, alongside data from users and local partners Google Maps is now able to make over 100 million daily updates.
This means more accurate directions, up-to-the-minute traffic information, and personalized recommendations for over 2 billion monthly users.
AI has already been used in creating Google Maps fuel efficient routes and immersive view functionalities.
The latest AI innovations for maps will utilize Google’s family of large language models, Gemini to revolutionize the way we use maps. The idea behind this new implementation is that this natural language processing model will help users get quick answers to more complex questions about navigating the world, whether this is a local route to work or a multi continental adventure.
Location inspiration
This AI enhanced update to Google Maps means users will be able to prompt Maps to help you find the right place at the right time.
In an official blog post, Miriam Daniel, VP & GM of Google Maps gives the prompt example’ “things to do with friends at night”. Users can input the prompt into the usual maps search interface and Google Maps will make suggestions such as ‘speakeasies’ and ‘live music’ venues.
For each venue suggested there will also be a Gemini summarized description based on compiled Google reviews from previous visitors.
Thanks to natural language processing, users will also be able to ask complex follow up questions, such as searching for ‘outdoor seating’ or ‘quiet atmosphere’.
Driving
The latest Google Maps AI features will make it easier to explore stop off points along your route before you set off.
Users can click ‘add stops’ to see recommendations for landmarks, attractions and dining options along the way.
Driving in unfamiliar places will also be made easier, with enhanced navigation features to clearly show lanes, crosswalks and road signs.
The map will also make clear the correct lane you will need to merge in, as early as possible.
Newly introduced features will also point out the entrances upon your arrival, as well as automatic options for the best places to park. To remember where you’ve left your car maps will now allow you to pin and AR navigate to its location.
Immersive View
New immersive view features will combine AI, imagery and computer vision to allow users to look inside stadiums and parks as well as check out along routes. This can also be altered to check what weather and traffic conditions will be like on the day and time you’re planning to visit.
