OpenAI have confirmed that they are going ahead with the public release of its most advanced AI model. GPT-5.6 will be released on Thursday 9th July after its launch was postponed last month at the request of the U.S. government over national security concerns.

As nations race to develop cutting-edge AI models, the technology is advancing faster than the guardrails designed to govern it. At the same time, the very same models are being exploited to power increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks against complex, interconnected systems still reliant on decades-old technology.

Government Concern

The initial delay came following U.S. officials scrutinizing the of powerful  AI models and fears concerns they could be exploited for cyberattacks or used by foreign governments, including China and Russia.

Ahead of the public release, OpenAI has provided GPT-5.6 to a small number of partners approved by the US government. This follows a new executive order that allows AI developers to voluntarily share models with the U.S. government for up to 30 days before broader deployment.

Earlier this year, Anthronic abruptly disabled its Mythos model following governmental concern. The model was later reinstated following additional safeguards put in place.

Authorities in China have expressed concern about the potential for Mythos to exploit software vulnerabilities, particularly that the U.S. could use the mega model against Chinese interests.

Its clear there is a shift in how governments approach AI innovation. Rather than putting in regulations after release, the authorities are clearly seeking early stage visibility into the models before they are available to the public.

The voluntary review framework is likely step one into responding to growing concerns that AI models could impact national defence, intelligence and cybersecurity,

GPT 5.6

According to OpenAI, GPT-5.6 Sol  will be its most capable AI model to date,

It’s set to deliver significant improvements in coding, scientific research and, interestingly, cybersecurity tasks.

The model introduces a new "max” reasoning mode. This allows it to spend more time solving complex problems, alongside an "ultra" mode that uses agents to tackle more demanding workflows.

OpenAI claims that their latest GPT iteration has been developed with the most robust safeguards yet.

The model is more capable at identifying vulnerabilities and supporting defensive cybersecurity work, the company says it has been designed to help security teams find and fix weaknesses rather than autonomously carry out end-to-end cyberattacks.

GPT-5.6 Sol will launch alongside two additional models, Terra and Luna, offering lower-cost and faster alternatives for enterprise users.
