SpaceX has signed Luxembourg-based Space Cargo for a 2028 mission using Starfall, its new spacecraft designed to bring commercial payloads back from orbit. Reuters describes Space Cargo as the first known customer for the programme.
Space Cargo plans to place its BentoBox payload system inside a Starfall capsule launched aboard SpaceX’s Starship rocket. The system could carry up to one tonne of material from customers conducting research or manufacturing in microgravity before returning those products safely to Earth.
The agreement gives SpaceX an early commercial customer for a service aimed at solving a problem that’s considerably harder than getting material into space in the first place. Once companies start making or testing products in orbit, they also need a reliable way to get them back.
Space Cargo Will Fly BentoBox on Starfall
Space Cargo is a European mission integrator that connects companies wanting to work in orbit with the spacecraft and infrastructure needed to get there. Its BentoBox platform is designed to support microgravity research and the return of payloads to Earth. The European Commission’s CORDIS programme describes BentoBox as a scalable platform for microgravity research and the return of useful payloads.
For the planned SpaceX mission, BentoBox will sit inside the Starfall capsule and could accommodate up to one tonne of customer material. Space Cargo chief executive Nicolas Gaume told Reuters that likely customers include companies working in life sciences and biotechnology.
Space-based manufacturing is attracting interest in these industries because some materials behave differently in microgravity, where the effects of Earth’s gravity are dramatically reduced. Reuters points to applications including pharmaceutical development and fibre optic manufacturing, where microgravity can change the way materials form.
But producing something useful in orbit only solves half the problem. Research samples, manufactured products and experimental materials still need to survive the journey through Earth’s atmosphere before customers can study, test or use them.
That’s the job SpaceX wants Starfall to handle.
Starfall Is SpaceX’s New Orbital Return Service
Starfall is an uncrewed capsule built specifically to return cargo from orbit. Reuters describes it as a disc-shaped capsule with an aluminium structure and a heat shield around 10 feet, or roughly three metres, across. It’s designed to carry around one tonne of payload back through Earth’s atmosphere.
SpaceX completed its first Starfall demonstration on 23 June 2026, launching the capsule aboard a Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. The US Space Force said the mission demonstrated Starfall reentry technology intended to support commercial access to microgravity and future cargo-return capabilities.
The service puts SpaceX into a growing part of the commercial space market centred on downmass, the industry term for cargo brought back from orbit. Launch providers have spent years expanding the amount of material companies can send into space, but returning commercial products and research samples remains a separate logistical challenge.
That becomes increasingly important as companies try to move beyond small research experiments and towards larger-scale manufacturing in orbit. More production means more material eventually needs a ride home.
Space Cargo isn’t relying exclusively on SpaceX to provide that route. Reuters reports that the company is also considering other reentry systems, but Gaume said SpaceX’s appeal comes down to the potential “volume and the rhythm” of future missions.
If Starship eventually launches as frequently as SpaceX intends, Space Cargo could gain access to considerably more capacity for both sending material into orbit and bringing it back.
2028 Mission Sets a New Starship Commercial Milestone
The deal also offers a clearer look at SpaceX’s timeline for Starship itself. Space Cargo’s mission is currently planned for 2028 and was described to Reuters as Starship’s first commercial mission. That would make the flight more than a milestone for Starfall.
It would also mark the point where SpaceX expects its still-developing Starship system to begin carrying conventional commercial customers. For now, though, 2028 remains a target rather than a fixed launch date. Starship is still under development, so the timing will depend on how the programme progresses.
There’s also some complexity around Starfall’s earliest commercial agreements. Redwire announced in August that its SpaceMD subsidiary had already signed a contract to fly up to 32 PIL-BOX pharmaceutical research units on a 2028 Starfall mission. Payload described that flight as Starfall’s “first dedicated contract mission”.
Reuters nevertheless describes Space Cargo as Starfall’s first customer, so the exact distinction between the two agreements hasn’t yet been made public.
What is clear is that SpaceX is beginning to move Starfall beyond demonstration flights and into commercial operations. With Space Cargo now planning a one-tonne BentoBox mission for 2028, the company has put a date against its effort to turn returning commercial material from orbit into a repeatable service.
