OpenAI’s ChatGPT witnessed a global outage earlier yesterday. The outage affected its latest text-to-video AI platform, Sora AI.
Last night [December 12, 2024] at 23:17 GMT, OpenAI acknowledged the outage and posted on its website that it was currently investigating the issue and will provide more updates shortly.
At 06:23 GMT, OpenAI announced that the issue had been resolved. It stated on its status page that between 3:16 pm PST and 7:38 pm PST on December 11, OpenAI’s services were unavailable.
“We began to see recovery for API traffic starting at approximately 5:40 pm PST , and for ChatGPT and Sora around 6:50 pm PST .”
ChatGPT Reinstated
The issue was mitigated at 7:38 pm PST , and all services are now fully operational.
OpenAI says that it plans to run a full root-cause analysis of this outage and will share details on its status page when complete.
Earlier this morning the Sam Altman-owned AI giant tweeted on X that ChatGPT, API, and Sora were down today but they have recovered.

This outage of OpenAI's products coincides with ChatGPT's integration into Apple's iOS 18.2. Some users have reported that the feature is not working in Apple Intelligence.
Outage unrelated to Apple Intelligence
“The OpenAI outage was unrelated to 12 Days of OpenAI or Apple Intelligence,” Edwin Arbus, OpenAI developer community lead tweeted on X.
“We made a config change that caused many servers to become unavailable.”

The root cause of the outage is still unclear. Sora was publicly launched earlier on Monday this week [December 9, 2024].
All the launches starting this week are a part of the AI giant’s “12 days of OpenAI” affair. The event’s purpose is to introduce new products every day leading up to the holiday season according to TechCrunch.
In addition to the release of Sora, OpenAI revealed that it would release the o1 reasoning model completely. This AI model is a large language model (LLM) that “thinks before it answers.”
Additionally, OpenAI introduced updates to Canvas and carried out the Apple Intelligence integration.
