Building the Future of Healthcare AI at InterSystems

BARC research shows that healthcare and life sciences companies, paradoxically, are moving faster with agentic AI because longstanding regulations have forced them to build strong data foundations.

Thank you Don Woodlock for exploring AI, healthcare, and InterSystems’ strategy with me at yesterday’s Analyst Summit.

Don was promoted to President of Intersystems in January after leading their healthcare business unit for six years.

It’s a fitting trajectory.

BARC research shows that healthcare and life sciences companies, paradoxically, are moving faster with agentic AI because longstanding regulations have forced them to build strong data foundations.

In fact, the healthcare sector has in some ways become a poster child for governed AI innovation.

Here are highlights of my enlightening conversation with Dan. Also watch the full interview and tell us what you think.

- Healthcare organizations, a major focus for Intersystems, aggressively implement AI for use cases such as ambient documentation of patient visits.

- Intersystems’ ambient documentation offering cuts administrative work for doctors and nurses by auto-updating EMRs, and helps them focus on patients

- The success of ambient documentation has boosted confidence among healthcare leaders that AI can safely solve operational problems.

- Since becoming President in January, Don has refined Intersystems’ AI strategy and embedded GenAI in products and processes to scale adoption.

- InterSystems is formalizing an AI strategy that covers adoption, implementation, support, development and sales.

- Like many companies, InterSystems does not train or fine-tune LLMs, which can be complex and costly.

- Intersystems instead tunes the surrounding stack: harness, tooling, prompts, context, and integrations to improve outcomes without bespoke model training.

InterSystems is a different kind of company: privately held, nearly 50 years old, with long employee tenures and selective hiring practices.

I’ll dig deeper into its strategy, offerings, and competitive standing in a post on Monday.

Many thanks also to Bobby D'Arcy, Kim Dossey, and Team Intersystems for hosting a fun and informative event here in Boston.
