Elon Musk has claimed that the latest iteration of his Grok AI chatbot, Grok 3, is the ‘smartest on earth’. The new model update will be released on the 17th of February, 2025 at 8pm PST.
Grok 3 has been designed to prioritise unexpected solutions in order to make it a first choice tool for problem solving.
But what is Grok 3 exactly and how does it work?
What is Grok 3?
Grok 3 is the latest version of Elon Musk’s GrokAI Chatbot. Grok currently has access to real-time data from X (formerly Twitter). This means it can provide up-to-date information and insights on current events and trends.
Grok differs from other chatbots as it is designed to have a "sense of humor" and a "rebellious streak". This means that the model typically aims to answer questions with wit and is more willing to tackle controversial topics that other AI chatbots might avoid.
The development of the new model was accelerated by the Colossus super computer and is powered by an enormous 100,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs. This helps Grok 4 to process larger data sets than ever before, improving accuracy and reducing training times.
Musk claims ‘Grok 3 is outperforming anything that's been released, that we're aware of.’
How does Grok 3 Work?
Grok 3’s training approach massively differs from its predecessors in order to ultimately improve performance. Ultimately this new training approach aims to reduce hallucinations through the use of multiple validation steps to improve accuracy and learn continuously.
Synthetic datasets will be incorporated into the training process. These are artificial datasets rather than real world sources and are used to simulate scenarios in a controlled environment. This will, hopefully, help to address data privacy issues.
Built-in self-correction mechanisms will allow Grok 3 to find and correct its mistakes. It will do this by evaluating its outputs and comparing them with known accurate responses. Gradually the model will be able to refine its answers to improve overall accuracy.
Grok 3 will also utilize reinforcement learning. This is a type of machine learning where an agent learns by interacting with its environment. It’s based on the concept of behavioral conditioning where an agent learns to associate certain actions with positive or negative rewards.
The updated model will incorporate human feedback loops, this is when a human reviewer gives feedback to AI generated content to improve it, as well as contextual training which will help Grok consider wider contexts in its answers.
