Nearly four years ago, George Floyd, an unarmed African man met his death when Derek Chauvin, a white police officer arrested the 46-year-old man outside a shop in Minneapolis, Minnesota, US.
The bodycam transcripts were an essential part of the reporting process. But did you know that while police officers are equipped with body cameras, most of the data is untapped? It is seldom reviewed or even glanced at.
Now police in Australia are trialling an artificial intelligence (AI) tool developed by Truleo, an AI technology aiming to empower police officers with AI-powered assistance. The AI tool analyses the data generated by body-worn cameras and other policing techniques.
The departments in Australian policing using the AI tool have not been disclosed yet. However, the Queensland Police Service have confirmed their involvement with the technology.
AI Police Assistant to Tackle Domestic Violence
A representative from Queensland Police Service in an official statement noted that the organisation is currently carrying out an AI trial with “a variety of technology” as part of its work tackling domestic and family violence.
“Once the trial is completed, a detailed evaluation will be undertaken before the QPS considers future options for using the technology," a Queensland Police Service spokesperson stated.
Truleo’s AI police assistant was also used by law enforcement in Texas, a first for the state.
The Kaufman County Constable’s Office Precinct 2 in October end became the first law enforcement agency in Texas to partner with Truleo, the patented body-worn camera (BWC) review software and artificial intelligence (AI) Officer Assistant tool for law enforcement.
The company’s AI police assistant is also being used by over 15 other states in the US with the aim of reducing tedious administrative tasks.
They are particularly meant to help law enforcement with common challenges associated with recruitment, retention, and positive reinforcement leading to improved officer morale and better policing outcomes.
100% Body-Worn Camera (BWC) Review
The Truleo AI police assistant is recognised for its 100% body-worn camera (BWC) review and systems. This AI technology identifies both positive and negative policing behaviours.
Additionally, the firm offers virtual police officer assistance backed by AI.
In the latest development, Truleo added “Field Notes” to its Officer Assistant Toolkit. This feature records voice notes from the officer in the field in real-time. The recording then generates a narrative of the report explaining what happened at the scene.
Earlier in November, EM360Tech reported about another AI-powered system that allegedly verifies witness statements without bias.
Scientists developed an AI model to analyse and verify victim statements before they’re evaluated by law enforcement.
AI-powered tools have seen a huge surge this year. According to Grand View Research, global AI adoption by organisations is expected to grow at a CAGR of 36.6% between 2024 and 2030.
As per Global Market Insights, by 2025, the wearable AI market is expected to be valued at $180 billion.
