“Neither Artificial Nor Intelligent” | Dr. Joe Perez @ Big Data LDN 2026

Is "artificial intelligence" the next term due for retirement? Dr. Joe Perez thinks it might be.

Author and keynote speaker Dr. Joe Perez tells Katie Baker which data term he'd retire, and why guardrails matter more than glitzy technology.

He says an event called Big Data London lives up to its name, and what he enjoys most is the passion in the room. These are people who see data as anything but a boring topic.

Joe also took the keynote stage at the show with "Leveraging Beauty & Brains for Effective Data Storytelling." His conversations with other data leaders keep coming back to people, and to keeping the human in the loop with AI. It's also the theme of his keynotes and his book.

Without the right foundations, he says, it doesn't matter how great the technology is. If the mindset is wrong, everything falls apart.

Some people say classification is going out of vogue, though Joe disagrees. Business intelligence isn't going anywhere either, in his view. The term he'd retire is "artificial intelligence", which he suspects has outlived its usefulness. Once you think about it, he says, it's neither artificial nor intelligent.

His advice on where to invest is to get back to basics. Put proper guardrails around your data, with data governance and the right mindset for how you'll use these tools and implement your strategy. Without them, none of the - glitzy lights will matter. If your AI plans have the lights but not the foundation, Joe's message is simple.
