Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba has informed CNBC that it is developing a rival to ChatGPT, making it one of many tech companies to develop the technology since the explosion of the generative AI chatbot in Novemebr last year.
The company is developing ChatGPT-style technology, which is now being tested internally, according to a business spokeswoman.
Adapt or die
The move comes as internet businesses around the world try to capitalise on the hype produced by ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence chatbot developed by OpenAI. ChatGPT users can ask questions on a wide range of topics, compose essays, and even produce code.
ChatGPT is classified as generative AI, which is a sort of artificial intelligence that can generate text or graphics.
Since 2017, Alibaba has been working on generative AI, according to the company. The company did not specify when its ChatGPT competitor will be available.
Also this week, Google introduced Bard, its artificial intelligence chatbot technology, as part of a "code red" response to ChatGPT's challenge.
