The costs associated with cyber attacks are devastating and enterprise cyber crime is evidently on the rise. In fact, Osterman Research found that 73% of midsized enterprises experienced security breaches last year.

BYOD security threats increase

As bring-your-own-device (BYOD) culture heightens, enterprises are undoubtedly more vulnerable to security threats. In a recent Bitglass survey of 400 IT experts, 85% said that their company enabled BYOD.

However, just 19% of the respondents said that BYOD had reduced security risks in their organisation. Above all, 30% of respondents declared that the leading inhibitor to BYOD adoption was company security concerns.

Cyber criminals are increasingly targeting endpoint devices such as laptops, mobiles, and tablets. Endpoint security is therefore integral to the protection of wireless devices connected to corporate networks.

The value of endpoint protection

Last month, a global leader in network and endpoint security Sophos acquired endpoint security platform company DarkBytes. As a result, enterprises can now benefit from the combination of Sophos' innovative portfolio and DarkBytes' experience in Managed Detection and Response (MDR) and Security Orchestration Automation Response (SOAR).

CTO at Sophos Joe Levy commented on the announcement. “Sophos predicts that eventually all IT security products will evolve into adaptive, managed services as more organisations realise that they are unable to scale resources fast enough to respond to today's threats,” he said.

“The strength and architecture of the DarkBytes platform will accelerate Sophos' plans to introduce global managed security services that will eventually span endpoint, firewall, mobile devices, wireless APs, and more," Levy added. Dennis Griffin, founder and former CEO at DarkBytes, also added that “the endpoint is the new perimeter of cybersecurity."

"It's where the attacks happen and where the data lives,” Griffin stated. “We built our unified platform to simplify high-end security operations using the combination of endpoint sensors and cloud-delivered analytics as the best way to achieve this."

"Our vision for using cloud-based, next-gen technology to make enterprise-grade cybersecurity simple to use made Sophos a natural home for the next stage of our development. We look forward to delivering the market's most comprehensive and flexible endpoint security solutions,” Griffin concluded.
