OpenAI says it is expanding its partnership with Samsung Electronics, working jointly on next-generation chip production as enterprise ChatGPT adoption in South Korea grows rapidly..
Harrison Kim, General Manager of OpenAI Korea, confirmed the deepening tie-up at a press conference in Seoul on Wednesday.
"One of the areas where we have made the most progress and gained the most recognition with Samsung Electronics is our joint production and research on the next-generation chips we are developing."
Kim did not elaborate on the specifics of the chip work. Samsung Electronics said it could not confirm information relating to customers.
Alongside the chip cooperation, Kim described Samsung as one of the largest-scale deployments of ChatGPT anywhere in the world, with employees in Korea and overseas using it for research and development, marketing and sales.
A Growing Chip Relationship
The growing relationship with Samsung reflects OpenAI's broader push to reduce its reliance on external chip suppliers. In June, the company unveiled its first custom AI chip, co-designed with Broadcom and named Jalapeno, built for AI inference, the process of crunching data to answer user queries in products like ChatGPT. OpenAI said at the time that Taiwan's TSMC would manufacture the chips.
Samsung's role has so far centred on memory. Last year, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix signed letters of intent to supply memory chips for OpenAI's Stargate data centre project.
Kim said demand for memory chips would keep growing as more advanced computing needs emerge, and that working with South Korea's semiconductor suppliers remained a priority for OpenAI's local office.
Enterprise Adoption Accelerates
OpenAI said the number of ChatGPT Enterprise users at South Korean companies and institutions had surged roughly 28-fold as of the end of August compared with a year earlier.
Businesses were broadening AI use beyond individual tasks toward company-wide operations, with functions including legal, sales, finance, marketing and operations increasingly relying on the tools, OpenAI said. The company declined to give user numbers.
South Korea had the largest number of paying ChatGPT subscribers outside the United States as of late last year, according to OpenAI.
The Samsung relationship also extends into device software. In June, Samsung said workers in its Device eXperience division, which covers mobile phones, televisions and home appliances, would be permitted to use ChatGPT, Google's Gemini and Anthropic's Claude internally.
OpenAI expects adoption in Korea to accelerate further following the September 4 launch of GPT-6 Astra, its latest model. The company said the release brought improved performance in computer use, professional work, science, coding and cybersecurity.
