Best Buy, now alongside Sears, Kmart and Delta, has been affected by the data breach of its third-party data firm, 7.ai. Best Buy came forward with a statement admitting as much.

The hack happened between late September and early October. A piece of malware made it so that payment information may appear to "have been compromised". Since being informed of the potential risk by 7.ai, Best Buy has done its best to solidify "the extent to which Best Buy online customers' information was affected". Their current investigation (and reassurance) of the incident leads to Best Buy stating only a small fraction has been affected.

In order to handle the backlash Best Buy has set up a privacy hub to address the concerns and questions of their customers. Best Buy has vowed to speak to the affected customers directly, while also offering free credit monitoring services where necessary.
